Stock Markets Tumble
The New York Stock Exchange fell by one-thousand points at the opening bell on Monday and remains volatile. Pundits say this is caused by China’s stock market, which has been in shambles over the past few weeks. [In our view, it has little to do with China’s manipulated stock market and much to do with the US manipulated stock market.] CBS 2015 Aug 24 (Story)

Our readers have spoken!
This is the fourth edition of Need to Know Around the World, which is the new name and look for Unfiltered News.
Last week, I asked for input on how you liked (or disliked) our new format. The overwhelming majority of those who responded said they thought the new format was great. You will find some of their comments in the Forum section of this edition.
However, there were a few negative comments that really caught my attention. Several readers said they found it difficult to track two columns of text, side-by-side, each with different subject matter.
I had to admit they had a good point. When we read a newspaper with multiple columns, we can glance from top to bottom of one column and then easily jump to the top of the next column. However, reading two columns on a computer screen is like reading a newspaper through a square hole in a piece of cardboard that slides over the page. It’s not the same experience.
The problem of dual columns manifested itself in other ways as well. With each passing month, more readers are viewing our publication on iPads and Smart Phones. Trying to crowd all this material into a small screen forces a re-arrangement of our material into patterns that can appear unintuitive and clumsy on mobile devices.
So, what to do? The fact that you are reading this means you already know that the layout has been returned to just one news column – the way it used to be. The result may be less graphically attractive, and the single column now is longer, but it insures that mobile devices will always start at the top of the news and progress from one section to the next in exactly the sequence intended.
I hope you approve – but be sure to let me know if you do not. This is a continuing experiment, and I am looking forward to learning from your experience.

Lebanon: Demonsrations over uncollected garbage have escalated into violent clashes between citizens and police in what is now being called the “You Stink!” movement. The unrest has now grown from discontent over garbage to ire over ‘government corruption’. The collapse of Lebanon would benefit the West and would leave Assad in Syria with one less ally. Monsanto traditionally has moved in the direction of monopoly by buying out its competitors. However, Syngenta, a Swiss-based biotech and chemical manufacturer just turned down a $47 billion buy-out. North Dakota: US District Judge, Ralph Erickson, has issued a temporary injunction blocking the EPA and Army Corps of Engineers from regulating small streams, tributaries, and wetlands under the Clean Water Act. The EPA will honor the injunction in the thirteen states that sued the agency, but the regulations will be implemented in all other states. Huff Post 2015 Aug 27 (Story) (Cached)
North Dakota passed a bill that began with the intent of requiring police to obtain a warrant to use drones, and it proposed banning weapons from being mounted on drones. As often happens, however, lobbyists are able to obtain legislative amendments that produce different results than the public expected. In this case, lobbyist Bruce Beckett rewrote the bill to ban only ‘lethal’ weapons on drones used by law enforcement. That means they can be equipped with tasers and gas canisters. Let’s see, now. How many people have been killed by ‘non-lethal’ gas and tasers? TechAeris 2015 Aug 27 (Story) (Cached)
Virginia: Vester Flanagan was fired from his job two years ago and sought revenge by shooting and killing two journalists who worked for WDBJ, his former employer. Flanagan claimed that he suffered racial and sexual discrimination, but the TV news station says he was fired because of his angry outbursts. ABC News 2015 Aug 26 (Story)
The Obama administration is blaming guns for the shooting by Vester Flanagan in which he killed two journalists. The White House consistently has insinuated that racism is the dominant factor behind similar events over the past several years and even Flanagan admitted that he was motivated by a “race war”. Still, the administration continues to blame gun ownership. InfoWars 2015 Aug 26 (Story) (Cached)
‘Birth tourism’ is a booming business in the US as illegal aliens gain birthright citizenship for their babies born on US soil. Pregnant Chinese women pay up to $50,000 to give birth in luxury homes in Los Angeles. CNN 2015 Aug 26 (Story)
The People’s Bank of China has accelerated its offloading of US bonds and buying yuan to support the exchange rate. The parents of a 12-year old boy are suing a boarding school in Massachusetts, claiming that the school’s WiFi signal is making their son sick. The school activated a stronger wireless signal in 2013. The family is seeking damages and wants the school to switch to Ethernet cable. Ferguson, Missouri: Municipal Court Judge Donald McCullin ordered that all arrest warrants issued in the city before 2015 be withdrawn. This follows a scathing report by the US Department of Justice that found the police and the court worked together to maximize revenue from those charged with minor crimes, a scheme called ‘policing for profit’. The price of oil has plunged from $103 per barrel last year to a new low of $42. This has been a hard hit on the economies of oil-exporting countries, such as Russia, Nigeria, Venezuela, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, and the Persian Gulf states. The glut in the oil market is a result of greatly increased production by the US and the Saudis who seem to be attempting to drive prices down to force their competitors out of the market. NY Times 2015 Aug 24 (Story) (Cached)
The US and Canada are the only developed nations that offer automatic citizenship to children born on their soil. The US recorded 4.3 million births in 2008, with 340,000 of them (8%) born of illegal aliens. When the babies reach 21, they may sponsor other family members to enter the US. Donald Trump (and others) are questioning the 14th Amendment that allows birthright citizenship. Fox News 2015 Aug 24 (Story)
The Mexican peso has been devalued by 19% over the past year as it slides into a record low of 16 pesos per US dollar. Low oil prices have contributed to the decline. Colombia’s currency has plunged 36% against the dollar and Brazil’s has fallen by 35%. [This makes the US dollar look good by comparison, but we must not forget that it is all relative. The US dollar, also, is in decline compared to prices for goods and services. It’s just that, at this moment, the others are worse. All national currencies are headed for the drain but at different velocities.] CNN posted 2015 Aug 22 (Story)
Utah is suing the federal government to regain some of its territory claimed by the feds. Critics say that states can’t pay for forest fire intervention, road maintenance, erosion control and other maintenance costs. Germany: Justice Minister Heiko Maas wants Facebook to remove ‘racist’ posts targeting asylum seekers after recent attacks on refugee camps. Twenty buildings used as refugee centers have gone up in flames in the country this year. Large areas of land in California’s Central Valley farming region are reportedly sinking as a result of farmers pumping too much groundwater to irrigate their crops during the drought. California’s Department of Water Resources is requiring these areas to come up with a plan to save water. Critics say that the state is trying to take over the water rights of landowners. [Although not mentioned in this report, other critics say the water is being wasted in environmental-protection schemes and being exported out of the area by privately controlled water districts to the highest bidders. No matter how you look at it, the fear of a water crisis is being used by governments and speculators alike to take water rights away from landowners.] ABC News 2015 Aug 26 (Story)

NEW SITE A JOY TO NAVIGATE

[This message was received shortly after the single-news-column version was published. Twiliz may have been the first person to view it on a smartphone.]
Good Day, Mr. Griffin. I am finding the new site a joy to navigate, especially on my G4 cellphone. Thank you for a solid upgrade!
NEW SITE A SHOCK AT FIRST
2015 Aug 25 from Christina Sophia
Well, it was sort of a ‘shock’ to see it at first, and the two photos with the first two news items threw me a little as I have become so accustomed to seeing the cartoon near the top. If you are discontinuing those I will miss them, as I always enjoyed them each week. It usually takes some getting used to changes, but I think I’m already used to the new look (took an hour), and now that I have read it all for this week, I don’t find the format very different.
I am liking the slight re-organization of content with the news in two columns and the color changes – which are not extreme – and are pleasant to look at. The new header is great and the blue border attractive. I would say you have achieved a more integrated graphic/symbolic look that suits your content and purpose. Even if I didn’t like it however, I would not stop reading it for such a reason!
KNOWLEDGE FROM 1850s
2015 Aug 25 from Alejandro Szita
Dear Ed, this is just to let you know that your rendition of The Law by Monsieur Bastiat is the most extraordinary piece of enlightened knowledge I have yet studied. I have read many books, listened to many lectures, but this voice from the 1850s has a clarity of mind that I have never encountered so far. Thank you for bringing this knowledge to life.
OLD FORMAT LOOKED TIRED
2015 Aug 24 from Keller Wieler
Hi here, actually the new format seems nice and simple, easy to read on my mac computer and large screen. it has easy to read font, easy flow, simple columns, and no ads cluttering along the way down the page. the old format just looked tired to me, and it looked old school. it was more cluttery, and some of the stuff on the sides columns made it look a little cheesy… so, this new format is a welcome refreshment.
NEW FORMAT HARDER TO READ
2015 Aug 24 from Claudia Park
I thought your old format was just fine. The new one is much harder to read and follow. Sorry.
SHORT AND SWEET RESPONSE
2015 Aug 24 from Sherry P. Jackson
I love the new look! It’s user friendly and easier to follow.
THUMBS DOWN ON TWO COLUMNS
2015 Aug 24 from Bmobley
I, too, don’t like the new design. The side-by-side columns make it very aggravating to move from one subject to another. Still love the content though!
TOO MUCH SCROLLING
2015 Aug 24 from Dena
As for your news site, I can’t say that I “hate” it but I don’t like the fact that I have to scroll back and forth (really up and down) to read the whole page. I read left, then right, then if the article was long have to scroll back up to get the next article. Much more time consuming than being able to read straight down like the old one, because i’m always losing my place and end up re-reading stuff.
CONTENT WITH EITHER FORMAT
2015 Aug 24 from Paul
I read your column every week. It’s among the best alternative news sources I repeatedly turn to. The content is what is important, and that is continuing at the same high level. As to format, I’m content with either. The new may be a small improvement. Thanks for your ongoing efforts.
TWO COLUMNS IS DISTRACTING
2015 Aug 24 from Carolyn
I don’t like the multi-column forma, and find myself moving back and forth from column one to column two to make sure I catch everything. I can’t tell the difference between the stories in columns 1 and 2 – I think 1 is “analysis,” but the format of some of the stories seem the same as some in column 2. It’s distracting to have to switch back and forth between the columns. I do enjoy your compendium of news, and thank you for putting it together.
GOOD THINGS IN THE NEW FORMAT
2015 Aug 24 from Steve Youngblood
I must admit I wasn’t thrilled with the changes at first, but that is to be expected with anything new. People are used to the old format. But after just 2 or 3 issues, I do like the new format better. It is more aesthetically pleasing, better spacing, the colors are a good choice, and the two columns are a nice touch. By far the best of all is the change on the hyperlink. Before the link seemed to be the whole text summary, the whole paragraph. I post these articles to Facebook, and other social media, so I copy the text. A lot of times I would have liked to copy a segment of it, and it wouldn’t let me do that b/c it was a paragraph long link. So having the ability to just click on (Story) is a big improvement to me.
As a general comment, I just want to say that it’s all great info, and even though I spend a lot of time keeping up with what’s going on, you always seem to find important issues that other sites missed. So I greatly appreciate you sharing the articles, and even more important, your excellent analysis to help us understand the big picture. So thank you for all the years of keeping us informed with all the vital information and perspective you selflessly share. I support the site by buying the excellent products as much as I can afford to. Keep up the great work, and I think the new format is great.
LIKES THE OLD FORMAT BETTER
2015 Aug 24 from Iman
Sorry, I liked it better before the change. I view it full page.
NEW FORMATY IS GREAT
2015 Aug 24 from Sue
I like the new look. It’s very readable and the colors are pleasing to the eye and easy to follow. Thank you to all who worked on it. It’s great.
NEW SITE HAS ‘FLARE’
2015 Aug 24 from Ed Anderson
I believe your new web site design works just fine and it is just as functional as the old site but with a little more contemporary flare. Keep up the good work in providing us with the news and analysis we can’t find anywhere else.
NEW SITE LENDS MORE LEGITIMACY
2015 Aug 24 from Alejandro Szita
I believe your new website design is quite an improvement over the previous one which indeed looked a bit outdated. This design is clearer, more modern, it looks cooler and, in my opinion, it lends more legitimacy to its content.
PUT IT BACK THE WAY IT WAS
2015 Aug 24 from Ron Pulham
You call that a redesign? You just changed the header, changed the background to blue, and replaced the ads on the left with news and comments. I don’t like ads any more than the next guy, but the content in the left margin looks out of place. My advice is to either do a complete re-design, or put it back the way it was.
