Large areas of land in California’s Central Valley farming region are reportedly sinking as a result of farmers pumping too much groundwater to irrigate their crops during the drought. California’s Department of Water Resources is requiring these areas to come up with a plan to save water. Critics say that the state is trying to take over the water rights of landowners. [Although not mentioned in this report, other critics say the water is being wasted in environmental-protection schemes and being exported out of the area by privately controlled water districts to the highest bidders.
