Go Viral

When a video or photograph or even a quotation is said to “go viral”, we know it has been seen by millions of people in a short period of time. This is not the result of being featured in mainstream media but the effect of common people sharing it by email and social networks.

Going viral is the modern version of pamphleteering that fueled a passion for liberty during the American Revolution. Without those pamphlets being passed from reader to reader, the colonies would not have united, and Thomas Paine’s famous line, “These are the times that try men’s souls” would be lost to history.

The digital age has created far greater possibilities for wildfire communications among the people than the colonists ever dreamed would be possible. Today, any citizen can become a Thomas Paine or a Paul Revere simply by using the Internet.

I like to think of them as pesky “freedom viruses” – not the kind that causes pain and suffering, but the kind that carries truth and enlightenment. There is nothing that can stop these viruses once they begin to multiply and draw strength from each other. The rapid spread of truth is a powerful weapon. In fact, it is the only weapon that modern totalitarians fear.
