Sweden’s central bank was the first to implement negative interest rates, which require depositors to pay the banks to hold their money. Amazingly, Swedes left their money on deposit or spent it instead of withdrawing it. Negative interest rates work best in cashless societies because, if cash does not exist, it cannot be withdrawn and, if it cannot be withdrawn, there is no choice but to pay the negative interest.
