Monsanto settled class-action lawsuits with farmers in seven states who were affected by loss of export sales after the discovery of GMO contamination of a wheat field in Oregon. [The company did not acknowledge guilt but agreed to pay some of the farmers' legal costs plus $350,000 to agricultural schools for research. Monsanto already has paid out $2.4 million for damages related to the Oregon problem, but this is a mere slap on the wrist for a company that turned a $2.47 billion profit from sales last year. Tunisia, North Africa: Two gunmen stormed a popular museum and killed at least 19 tourists (mostly Europeans) and wounded 50 more. [The gunmen opened fire on tour buses outside the museum. The UK, Germany, France, and Italy have joined the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to be funded with $50 billion and will compete with the US-dominated World bank. The city of San Diego and the San Diego Port District are suing Monsanto for pollution from chemicals used in industry from 1930 through 1977. [The suit claims that the careless use of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyl) caused pollution in the bay leading to the current presence of PCBs in fish. A damning internal report from Monsanto in 1969 shows that they were aware of the health dangers of PCBs but created strategies to prolong their sale before being outlawed ten years later. Monsanto is facing hundreds of personal-injury lawsuits from individuals in the area who have contracted non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Obama promised to have the most transparent administration in history, but now has exempted the Office of Administration from Freedom-of-Information-Act requests. [That office handles archived emails and has complied with FOIA requests for 30 years until it became politically inconvenient.
