Andreas M. Antonopoulos is a Bitcoin technology expert who recently testified before the Banking Committee of the Canadian Senate. This is a video of that appearance. [If you have any interest in the Bitcoin phenomenon, you should watch this. It is long, but you will be rewarded. Pay particular attention to his warning that cryptocurrencies are innately secure against hackers and thieves because of the nature of their architecture. Since data is diffused throughout the network instead of in a single, master computer, it is impossible for a hacker to capture all of it at once for tens-of-thousands of users, such as happens often with current financial-payment systems administered by banks and credit-card companies. Individuals may be hacked and robbed (just as happens with traditional payment systems) but it is impossible to steal the whole data base. He cautions the committee not to mess up that natural security by trying to regulate the system, supposedly to prevent cyber crime. Any such regulations would require bringing all the data together in a central location so it could be monitored and, presto, the innate security of systemic diffusion would disappear. A quick chemtrail question -- Do locations with less chemtrails have more bugs? We were heavily hit with chemtrails in Chesapeake, VA and we had very few bugs. We recently moved back to a prior home in the Richmond, VA area where there are significantly fewer chemtrails. Guess what? This place is teaming with bugs, especially ants.

After an X-Class solar flare or an EMP (assuming the utility companies continue to do nothing to protect the power grid before such events) Bitcoin will be history – just the same as credit cards, bank accounts, savings accounts, wire transfers, PayPal, stock sales, insurance payments, retirement funds, social security, and all other forms of monetary transaction except currency and coins (especially if they contain gold and silver) food stockpiles, and other life necessities. However, as long as the grid is working, Bitcoin might become more useful (and profitable) than fiat currencies. It is that possibility that is intriguing.

I have been following Bitcoin (also bought one, & started 'mining' them) because my son has become quite an expert on it, and attends San Francisco Bitcoin meet-ups where another expert, Andreas Antonopoulos, regularly attends. Based on what I've learned so far, the implications and effects of this new form of currency are far reaching, will change money forever, and it doesn't look like the powers that currently control money in the world are going to be able to maintain the control they have now. But, as you say Ed, "the battle lines are drawn,... and the stakes are very high indeed". And yes too, it's a "fascinating experiment" that is intriguing, and very worthy of our attention!

Hello David.
I suspect that you have not actually read my complete message and may have jumped to conclusions based on headlines and a few random statements. Your concern is something I pondered for a long time before agreeing to participate in this project. Yes, there are parallels to the Silk Road and Tulipomania, but I don't think you give our readers enough credit for being intelligent enough to make an evaluation for themselves, provided they have all the facts. That is why I have gone way out of my way to emphasize the numerous risks involved with any cryptocurrency, Bitcoin included.

If you read through my messages, you will see that I have been careful never to overstate the advantages of Bitcoin technology or recommend that anyone invest. I have always made it clear – and then double clear – that this is a speculative investment and that no one should put money into it that they can't afford to risk. Having repeated that caution at every turn, I feel that I have done my readers a service by calling their attention to a monetary technology that is at the cutting edge and could be profitable as it grows. Furthermore, no one can read my messages without realizing that the entire program could collapse at any time with no guarantees to the contrary.

I do not want to be in the business of filtering out financial information based on a paternalistic stance that people are children and should be exposed only to what someone thinks is good for them. My readers are smart enough to evaluate the pros and cons of Bitcoin – just like you are. And some will come to a different conclusion.

David, I appreciate the spirit of your advice, and I thank you for letting me know what's on your mind.

IS BITCOIN TRAINING WHEELS FOR A CASHLESS SOCIETY?

I am so grateful for the work you do. I have just one question but, first, a little background: I KNOW first hand that the world banking system is pushing like crazy for a Cashless Society. This is due in part to 2 needs: 1) They want TOTAL control of what, where and how people do things. And 2) It makes tax collection easy, as they just remove taxes from a persons bank account without showing up with guns.

My question is: Aren't they allowing Bitcoin to survive in order to indoctrinate the next generation into using online digital currencies with ease?

Hello Brad.
I don’t think that governments and banks have any intention of encouraging Bitcoin because they have no way to tap into the network or deduct taxes through it. The reason the new generation is interested in Bitcoin is that it tends to take governments and banks out of the loop. Of course, eventually, they may figure out a way for governments to tap into cryptocurrency networks but, right now, it looks like that would be quite difficult. If stores and online vendors transact business in Bitcoin, they probably will be required by law to report those transactions, so that could be an entry point for loss of privacy, but much has yet to be learned as the technology evolves before we will know the answers to these questions.

EXPECTS GROWTH OF BITCOIN TO BE SLOW

I’m an IT professional and did a detailed study on Bitcoin with a friend early this year. I do understand most of the technical aspects of it but believe it will remain a niche currency for the immediate future. It won’t even come close to replacing the $US dollar or any other major currency at any time in the foreseeable future. It has no fundamental value other than its rarity based upon the cryptographic model. It already had its big run in 2013 and is unlikely to skyrocket in value again now that concerns about its security have been exposed. Only a currency backed by hard assets like precious metals could ever replace the current system as you know very well. While I could be wrong it appears that Bitcoin growth and market penetration will be slow over the next several years and remain mainly in the domain of cryptocurrency enthusiasts.

UNITY OBSTACLES IN THE UK

I read your communications [about the upcoming First Congress of Freedom Force] with interest and thought I would write a line about the equivalent movement over here [in the UK], and the difficulties the organizers are experiencing.

I'm involved with many of the groups you may have come across if you watch the UK movement. They just had a conference too, but a large number of the most energetic activists weren't there. People - especially the young - who have already committed themselves to this movement often lose their income, and if you have no free or very deep concessions, you get more interested, respectable observers and less action. I think it's always a difficulty, because I have quite a few followers, which is great for the ego, but what's needed is more members with initiative.

We here are transiting from the early stage of a movement, full of fiery misfits, to the mid stage where more respectable, mainstream people join in, but we still need the energy and inventiveness of the young we are getting stuck in this conflict of temperament when we do need both. My solution is to hold grassroots cheap-to-free gatherings with a language better suited to the young and energetic. They also want direction but won't get into events with hotels and ensuites. So, at a radical green field gathering this year, I found a lot of support and enthusiasm speaking a slightly different language, and am now working to join the strands together.

Your experience is universal, and it is one of the reasons that Freedom Force is structured differently from all similar endeavors in the past. It is impossible to create one organization that will appeal to a broad cross section of the masses, other than a political party with the only common bond being the desire to win elections and acquire personal power. That’s not for freedom-loving activists, of course, so what’s the Freedom Force solution?

It’s about creating an ideological umbrella (a network) that will include leaders in many different organizations, each with a different constituency, program, culture, and style, but all headed in the same direction regarding underlying principles. In this fashion, the deeply committed and highly informed help each other build successful components of the overall movement within their own groups. You can read all about this at the Freedom Force web site here. We know this strategy works, because it is what put our collectivist opponents into power, and it already is beginning to work for us.

If this makes sense to you, it would be wonderful if you could participate in the Founding Congress of Freedom Force and represent your group (or groups) in the UK. We already have Delegates from three countries enrolled. A fourth would really put this endeavor on the map!

IS INTRINSIC VALUE NECESSARY FOR SOUND MONEY?

I disagree [that sound money must have intrinsic value]. If I had just returned from Vegas and had a spare casino chip in my pocket that I forgot to cash out, and you intended to go there and play next week, there would be no reason why you would not accept near face value for it. Access to the payment network gives a Belagio chip value outside the casino in the same way a ticket to a Broadway play has value.

I don’t think we are in disagreement on the issue of intrinsic value. It’s just that you think that the lack of intrinsic value is offset by the likelihood that the casino chip will continue to be readily accepted. Those are two different issues. While the casino is in business, the chip, which has no intrinsic value, is desired because of the possibility of exchanging it for goods and services that do have intrinsic value. However, if the casino goes out of business, the chip will have only collector’s value or the value of melted plastic. I am sure we are in agreement on that.

Thanks for the email. And thanks for thinking through this with me. Isn't your reply like saying the telephone has no intrinsic value beyond collector/melt value if the phone companies shut down permanently. The statement may be accurate, but then I guess you have to look at the possibility/likelihood of a permanent network shutdown.

The telephone analogy is right in target. Yes, it would have very little value if the phone company shut down or the technology evolved. That’s one reason that telephones would not be useful as a medium of exchange. Throughout history, people always have been attracted to media of exchange that have value in themselves with as little dependence on other factors as possible, especially technology – but you know all that. In short, telephones and casino chips share the same handicap: They depend on something else to give them value.

It is true that gold and silver also depend on technology to enhance their value, the technology of mining, and refining, but the differences are significant. (1) With metals, the technology is so simple that it may be considered primitive, which means it is within the reach of almost anyone who wishes to acquire it, (2) the technology imparts value to the metals which will remain even if the technology is abandoned, and (3) the technology exists to service the metals, the metals do not exist to service the technology.

This later point often is overlooked. Phones, for example, exist only to serve the technology of electronic communication. Electronic communication does not exist to serve telephones. With gold and silver, the relationship is the reverse. The metals do not have value because they support the mining industry. The mining industry exists because the metals have value. In the old days, miners were not proficient at extracting precious metals from low-grade ore. They simply pulled it from streams and riverbeds and searched for the mother lode where it could be hauled away in pure chunks. The only technology was panning and digging. Chemistry came later.

In summary: The more something depends on technology, the less useful it is as a medium of exchange. Gold can serve the function of money based on primitive technology available to everyone, not just the technological elite, and this is one of its qualities that is likely to insure that it will remain a top monetary contender long into the future. However, if the day comes when it is possible to inexpensively create gold through technology, then the Gods of the Copybook Headings will descend upon it and replace it with something else - with intrinsic value.

CORRECTION TO COMMENTARY REGARDING EU AND UK

Dear Mr. Griffin,
Please allow me to correct a commentary included with the latest Unfiltered News, where you say: "It seems that economic equality is OK when one is on the receiving end but not so popular when on the giving end. The UK is refusing to pay the bill, and anti-EU sentiment grows, not just in the UK, but Spain and France as well."

While it is correct that Cameron claims to not want to pay an extra $2.6 billion (whether he means it or just wants to trump UKIP is another matter), the EU-bill is NOT based on the UK fairing better that fellow EU-countries, but merely due to the fact that the EU has adopted an new method of calculating a country's GDP by redefining costs (like R&D, government 'education' and military means) as investments ... and backdating the method to 2010.

The new calculation is ... designed to make economies appear to fare better. This way, The Netherlands 'grew', hey presto, by €45 billion euro on a single day, Jun 25, 2014, without anything changing in the real world. In the UK this had similar unsubstantiated 'growth', resulting in the extra $2.6 billion being added to the EU extortion racket. For The Netherlands, the bill is €642 million, but even though Finance Mister Dijsselbloem in April promised twice (!) that the bill would not come, he's now prepared to pay it without even the pretense of a fight.

The only proper future for the EU is its abolishment, as it is for any criminal organization.

A COLLECTIVE OF INDIVIDUALISTS?

I thank you for what you have created. God bless and keep you and all of us who join in the noble endeavor of Freedom Force. I deeply appreciate and admire your discipline, longevity, and keen awareness of the urgency of our "collective" situation as "individuals".

We have one of the most unfathomable riddles of human existence to answer - for ourselves, first and foremost. Until and unless we answer the riddle of "the one in many, the many in one" for ourselves, then we shall have little to offer anyone else, friends, family, acquaintances, or foe. We come together as self-declared "individuals", meeting as a body, looking for one accord, hoping to create a "collective" of sorts, to move as one into action -- in the name of opposing "collectivism" as a group of "individuals". Hmmm. I do reflect on this.

In the meantime, [in anticipation of being a Delegate to the upcoming First Congress of Freedom Force] I shall welcome and entertain goose bumps, spinal chills, and those "butterflies in the stomach" that a great British actor once acknowledged, without which he declared he would not go on stage!

Hello Alan.
I cannot resist a short response to your riddle. It’s not so complicated if we stop looking at the What and look, instead, at the How. We are talking about working together as a team for mutual benefit. Everyone agrees that there is great value in that. In fact, survival sometimes depends on it. But shall this cooperation be brought about by coercion or shall it be voluntary? Shall soldiers be drafted or shall they be volunteers only? Shall we be forced to support charitable works through taxation or shall we be free to act (or not to act) as we see fit? The answer is critical. If coercion is the choice, then we have collectivism and inevitable tyranny in the name of the group. If volunteerism is the choice, then we have cooperation, individualism, and optimum freedom.

The only exception to this rule is in the defense of one’s life, liberty, or property. In those cases, the use of force and coercion is justified, because it is an extension of the individual right of self defense. We have a right to harm others if necessary to prevent ourselves from being harmed by them, but we do not have that right for any other purpose.
