Washington state: The Environmental and Nuclear Safety Manager at the nuclear-waste site in Hanford, was fired after she expressed concern that the facility was at risk of a hydrogen explosion that could set off a nuclear reaction. During the 3-1/2 years of World War 2 that started with the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and ended with the Surrender of Germany and Japan in 1945, the U.S. produced 22 aircraft carriers, 8 battleships, 48 cruisers, 349 destroyers, 420 destroyer escorts, 203 submarines, 34 million tons of merchant ships, 100,000 fighter aircraft, 98,000 bombers, 24,000 transport aircraft, 58,000 training aircraft, 93,000 tanks, 257,000 artillery pieces, 105,000 mortars, 3,000,000 machine guns, and 2,500,000 military trucks.
We put 16.1 million men in uniform in the various armed services, invaded Africa, invaded Sicily and Italy, won the battle for the Atlantic, planned and executed D-Day, marched across the Pacific and Europe, developed the atomic bomb and ultimately conquered Japan and Germany.

It's worth noting, that during almost exactly the same amount of time, the Obama administration couldn't build a functioning web site.

THE GRID SURVIVES LIGHTNING STRIKES. WHY NOT SOLAR FLARES?

Our electrical grid withstands frequent direct lightning strikes often without any effect requiring repair. Most frequently when a repair is needed it is to reset a circuit breaker or replace a fuse. Do you imagine an emp to be greater than a lightning strike?

REPLY FROM GEG:
A lightning strike is enough to destroy an unprotected transformer. The outer casings of most of them are grounded so they can withstand lightning strikes, because the energy is diverted around the windings in the transformers themselves. If the protective circuits fail and the transformers are destroyed, even then, it usually doesn’t take long to replace them. The utility companies keep spares on hand for that purpose.

Solar storms deliver hundreds of thousands of times more energy than a lightning strike, but they do not impact the Earth all at one point, as a bolt of lightning does. The solar energy is absorbed into the Earth at its magnetic poles and arrives at the power grid wherever main transformers are located, because their electrical circuits are grounded to the Earth. Instead of flowing around the transformers through their outer structures and leaping into the sky (the reverse path of a lightning strike), the energy surges through the transformers’ windings and into the grid itself on its way to consumers.

Circuit breakers are designed to stop that action, but the moving energy has inertia and must go somewhere. It can’t go back into the ground, because that is where it is coming from in the first place, so it converts into heat within the wires.

Because transformers are filled with wires tightly wound together, they become a primary focus of heat. The heat burns insulation, melts metal, and boils the oil that is used for coolant under normal operating conditions. The loss of structural strength and the presence of steam is what causes transformers to explode.

In the event of a benchmark solar eruption aimed at the Earth, this action would not be limited to just one small location, such as a lightning strike, but would occur simultaneously at every grounded transformer in the grid. Electrical engineers working on this problem are using scenarios that involve entire continents.

I am not concerned about the small transformers you see on power poles or in substations along the road. Before the surge gets to them, it must pass through the primary transformers – the size of a house – located near power generating plants. They cost millions of dollars, and there are no spares sitting around. Each one is custom built to the unique requirements of the grid they serve. It normally take 12 to 24 months to get one built, delivered, and installed. The plants that build these cannot handle more than one or two at a time – so, if hundreds should be needed, it could take twenty years or more to get them replaced – and that is assuming the factories that build them have electrical power to do the work.

The short, understated answer to your question, John, is: Solar flares are potentially far more destructive than lightening strikes.
