Iceland is planning to introduce the 'Auroracoin', a cryptocurrency similar to Bitcoin in that it will be limited in quantity and exchanged digitally. [It was developed in response public dissatisfaction with the present currency (the krona). The krona has lost 99.5% of its value against the US dollar as a result of wild money printing, while the dollar lost 95% of its value relative to gold for the same reason. Initially, a small quantity of Auroracoins will be issued to every citizen to encourage them to use it. Five hours later they staggered out of the theme park. Her head was reeling and her stomach felt upside down. He then took her to a McDonald's where he ordered her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a chocolate shake. Then it was off to a movie, popcorn, a soda pop, and her favorite candy, M&M's. What a fabulous adventure!

Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed exhausted. He leaned over his wife with a big smile and lovingly asked, 'Well Dear, what was it like being eight again?

Her eyes slowly opened and her expression suddenly changed. 'I meant my dress size, dummy'.

The moral of the story: Even when a man is listening, he is gonna get it wrong.

SOLAR STORMS ARE NO THREAT IF MAN REPENTS HIS SINS?

The solar maxim is coming to an end, after another 11 year cycle. This is old news for those of us who have been following the astronomy. The thing we need to concern ourselves with is the society's replacement of Morality with Materialism.

This nation is way past the point of no-return on its way to "perdition". But, the kindness and compassion of God will always allow reprieve if repentance is sincere. How do we know it's sincere? The nation will reverse its evil ways by replacing "statutes and regulations" with God's Law (= The 10 commandments), and by replacing "law enforcement" with Justice.

A nation's demise has to do w/how many "sins" they've piled up against themselves in God's presence. The sin-limit before God 'drops the hammer' is something only He knows. A wise man would not test God's patience, would you? You recall the last time God got angry w/mankind: The world-wide flood occurred.

I think [building devices to protect the power grid] may not be the best way to go. Today there are many technologies that can power our homes without us being beholden to the power companies. I think we should work to bring these kinds of technologies to the market place.

Hello Panky.
I agree that alternative energy sources would be a better solution – especially if they could be built to withstand the EMPs and CMEs of solar storms. The problem is that, even without opposition from the power industry, there is no way to convert the world to alternative energy devices within each home or community within the next 50 years. We may not have that much time. Then, add the resistance that will come from the industry, and we are looking at a theoretical solution that is not going to happen in time to solve this problem. It seems to me that hardening the existing grid, which probably could be done with a few years, is the most logical way to go at the present time, don’t you think?

So your hope is that the government will step up and construct devices for us? Good luck with that.

Thankfully, that is not our goal. Our goal is to motivate governments to require power companies to (1) design devices that will protect their sensitive equipment (those designs already are fairly well known) and (2) to actually have them built and installed by a specified date. Governments are not qualified to design or build these devices any more than they are to design and build space stations or fighter planes.

I hope you agree that it is logical to prepare for the inevitability of an X-Class solar pulse striking the power-grid. Not to do so would be like building a skyscraper without exit stairs in case of fire. Thanks for caring.

It is not an easy call as to when fear is healthy or harmful. I prefer to not think in terms of fear to benefit the American people (or any others for that matter). I think that fear, like radiation absorption, can be cumulative over time and, as such, can have debilitating effects contrary to one's best interests. ...

I am curious as to your awareness of the topic of Microwaves in our environment, which most people apparently do not sense, feel, or hear. People who do are sometimes referred to as EMF Hypersensitive. I do not prefer to be so included, but am, perhaps due to my proximity to much electrical equipment over many years.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. Yes, I am aware of the microwave-radiation problem but, I gather from the response we have received from our readers regarding vulnerability of the power grid, many do not welcome hearing about it. Too much “fear” and all that. I guess it’s human nature – and cumulative overload, as you suggest. I any event, we continue to carry news items relating to the problem when we feel they are based on fact. Let the truth fall where it may. UTILITY ELECTRICIAN SAYS TRANSFORMERS ARE VULNERABLE

As a utility electrician I can say that whether it's from the sun or not, the infrastructures are getting old and tired and are not being replaced quickly enough. Many transformers, whose expected life should be 40 years, have been in service for 50, 60 and heading for 70 with few plans to replace them. Like you stated, there are no replacements, and it indeed takes 18-24 months to have one made to specifics.

In my opinion, the other serious and real concern that could take the grid down in large areas in my opinion is this new "Smart grid". I think you are correct in alerting the masses to this reality so they can prepare for such an event.

I do appreciate your awareness of a possible solar flare disruption of the power grid. It definitely is not fear mongering and the issue needs to be addressed intelligently, both from the probability standpoint and, as you have pointed out, the fear component. With regard to the latter, you have an excellent platform from which to address abusive and reprehensible fear mongering being perpetrated incessantly by newspapers and television networks. The hoaxes, crafted for that purpose, and presented to our masses for precisely that purpose are quite evident to persons who have taken the time to investigate their veracity.

IS BITCOIN A SOUND MONEY?

Bill, I like them all because they offer some escape (even if only marginally) from fiat money. In a free society in which no type of money has a government-enforced monopoly, the market will choose the best one or perhaps two.

Bitcoin holds great promise for growth in purchasing power, but I must caution everyone that Bitcoin lacks one important quality for an ideal money: tangibility. If the Internet goes down or if it is blocked by governments from transmitting Bitcoin data, no one would possess anything of intrinsic value. You can't eat it or make jewelry from it or use it in industry. All you would have is a printout or a screen image of some numbers -- not a lot different from Confederate bills from the Civil War. That's why some have called it vaporware money.

The bottom line is that no form of money is safe in a totalitarian system that controls the money supply and forces citizens to accept its fiat currency. Not even gold is safe because, under such a system, gold could be declared illegal, and common people who use it in trade could be imprisoned or even executed. The ultimate solution is not to be found solely in choosing the right type of money but in establishing the right type of political system so we can be free to choose whatever type of money we want. Under such a society, I think that Bitcoin could be a serious contender, although I probably would choose to use gold or silver.

DON'T LET THE SOLAR THREAT BECOME AN EXCUSE TO NATIONALIZE THE GRID

I read the letter to you talking about fear and how we have been drenched in it. And the letter was true and right on the mark. Your response was good too.

If our marketplace was free, alternative modes of power delivery would be available, limited only by human ingenuity and consumer understanding of the situation. But the market isn't free. Government interference has created monopolies, and those monopolies are run by folks who sit in board meetings and congratulate each other on how much they're getting paid. I know. I've seen it work, or rather, I've seen it limp along.

The call to harden the electric grid will fall on deaf ears unless someone, probably in government, figures out a new way to leverage this need, which appears real, to gain more power over all of us or to take the remaining crumbs of our wealth that the other predators haven't stolen already. Realistically? The moronic predators will push to nationalize the power grid, which will be exactly the opposite of the right thing to do.

The correct long-term solution would be to open up delivery options. Make it easy for newcomers to provide us with power on an alternate grid using an alternate method of delivery. And that means de-regulate it in such a way that existing companies cannot take advantage of their current monopolies to rob us blind. Free up existing easements and make the process easier for competitors.

Since public utilities enjoy the advantages of legalized limitations on new competition, to keep their monopolies they should be required to upgrade their grids appropriately if they want to maintain the status quo. That would be an interim solution. Long term, open it up for competition.

NEEDS MORE DATA ABOUT SOLAR STORMS

Having considered your video, it still is not credible that we should be making any decision on the basis given about the risk. SHOW US THE NUMBERS THAT MATTER. Take the range of 'misses' that a standardized idea of a grand solar storm could have and match those to the size of the earth disaster for each level of closeness, then attach the likelihoods for such ranges. Then you would be giving the reader/viewer what is rationally needed for decision making on this sort of proposal.

The need for these evaluations is one of the reasons for our project. The studies you recommend should be done BUT NO ONE IS DOING THEM! This is beyond the scope of individual citizens or film producers. It must be done by the power companies or commissioned by governments. That's one of our goals. If we just sit around and say that studies should be done, and if no one is doing the studies, the only way we will ever know is to wait and see if the lights go out.

Studies are definitely needed, so please help us fire up the boiler of public pressure to get the process rolling. I would love to learn that there is no cause for concern, but that will not be possible without the studies you suggest. I do not favor the idea of doing nothing except waiting and hoping that "someone" will do what needs to be done. Thanks for your response.

THE SOLUTION IS FREE ENERGY FROM THE MAGNETIC FIELD IN THE EARTH
I feel that a video to magnify the catastrophe [from solar storms] does little to solve the problem. As I see it, any money collected should be diverted to developing PLANS on how to construct a Magnetic Generator to power each of our homes, and on-ward and up-ward to power commercial enterprises. Start with the home first because it can be affordable over a short period of time. Of course businesses/govt. could slowly plan to accommodate an expense of that magnitude. The thorn in the haystack will be existing electrical providers. Offering such a solution would put them out of business over the long haul.

I would love to help develop a plan such as you describe. To whom would we divert the money? Whoever that is, how close are they to producing a functioning generator for this purpose? How much money and time would it take to prove the technology? If money were no object, how long would it take to manufacture and install one of these devices in the majority of homes in America? What would you suggest we do to overcome the obstacles that would come from the existing power companies? Is the likelihood of positive answers to these questions high enough to forget trying to protect the existing system with known technology? The solar clock is ticking.
