IS THE MONROE DOCTRINE GOOD OR BAD?

Dear Mr Griffin,
I am hoping you could tell me if this document is true of the facts stated concerning The Monroe Doctrine. [The article strongly defends the Monroe Doctrine, which declared that the US will take military action to prevent any European power from establishing a military presence in South America or Canada.] If it is correct, then I am also hoping we can make it well known over the Internet to get the attention it needs.

Hello Joe.
There is a mixture of fact and opinion in this issue. The Monroe Doctrine is revered by Americans because it has been described as a policy of defense against a foreign military threat in the Northern Hemisphere, and that, generally, has been viewed as a good thing because it protects America and promotes the best interests of the nation. Critics, on the other hand, point out that it is up to the political leaders of the day to say what the nation’s best interests are, and that can be quite vague and self serving.

Transportation and weaponry have advanced greatly in the last 100 years. What seemed reasonable a century ago regarding the danger of foreign intervention in Mexico will sound reasonable today about so-called foreign intervention in Iraq or Syria. It is possible today to say that any military presence or threat anywhere in the world is a matter of national interest to the United States. Also, this is the philosophy that justifies a pre-emptive strike to prevent a perceived enemy from becoming an actual enemy. Most wars of aggression in recent history have been started under that pretext.

In other words, there are pros and cons. Under constitutional leadership with no aggressive plans for global power, the Monroe Doctrine would be reasonable. Under unconstitutional leadership with a mindset to use military force to expand an empire or coerce nations into a New World Order, it’s a very bad idea.
