She just wants to be an exception because of the good that she is doing. We see the problem differently. The Dallas Police Department now requires police who are involved in shootings to wait 72 hours before giving their statements. [This is in the wake of an incident in which an officer claimed the person he shot lunged at him with a knife, but a surveillance video showed this was not true. Chinese financial expert explains (with a bit of clarification by GEG in this summary) what is happening in the gold market: [When US and Western central banks lease out gold, they create more claims on their gold than they can honor. These contracts become derivatives (called paper gold) that investors think are as good as gold. These derivatives soak up money that, otherwise, would purchase real gold and, thereby, the price of gold is artificially suppressed. Governments encourage this because it disables gold as a measure of inflation and prolongs faith in their failing currencies. Many countries have stored their gold reserves with the Fed. Germany may ask for its gold to be returned, not because it is worried about the US having leased it out (it knew that all along) but because it wants to get into the gold-derivatives game, too. China and Russia are stockpiling gold for the same reason. They are anticipating a global credit crisis where all fiat currencies collapse, and only gold will be used in international settlements. HOW REALISTIC IS WHAT WE CALL DEMOCRACY?

Joan, This is an excellent analysis. Be aware, however, that what Munger calls a constitutionally limited democracy is what used to be called a republic. More specifically, a republic used to be the word to describe any form of government, even a monarchy, if its power was limited by rules (called constitutions) to protect the protect the people from the state itself. Today, of course, it has lost that meaning. When Communist China can call itself the Republic of China and no one gives it a second thought, the word is useless. The shifting meanings of words can get in the way of concepts.

The concept in this video is fundamental to the ideology of individualism. We should try to use the word individualism as much as possible so that it gradually seeps back into popular usage. Words are the tools of thought. If we have no word for something, it is difficult to think about the concept behind that word. When most people understand the meaning of individualism and its opposite, collectivism, the victory of freedom will be assured.
