US: Here is a report from mainstream media (ABC) that we urge you to examine carefully. [On the surface, it appears to be a straightforward report of hackers from the Middle East (probably hostile governments such as Iran) who have overloaded American bank computers to the point where they can not handle legitimate requests from customers. How many people do you think the planet can support?

Hello Windy.
I have no idea how many people the planet can support - and I don't think anyone else does either. I do know that the number is changing with the advance in agriculture productivity. Also, when the day comes when sea water can be economically desalinated and used for irrigation, the number of humans that can be supported will be greatly expanded. The problem of toxic waste also is being solved by technology, so all the factors are in flux.

The answer to your question depends primarily on one's view regarding man's individual worth. Is he the major unit of society or is the group superior to him? If he is subordinate to the group, then there will be committees that will determine the answer based on political and economic factors plus a few hidden agendas thrown in for good measure. But if the individual person is viewed as the most important component of society, then the decisions regarding his fertility will be made by him, not the state.

I hold the latter view, because it is the foundational premise of individualism as opposed to collectivism. I believe that, without coercion of the state, human population will be self regulating, as it is for all other species. That does not necessarily mean that wars, plague, and famine must forever dominate the planet, which is the assumption by those who advocate coercive population control. In almost every nation of the world where there is a high level of education, human population (excluding immigration) now is on the decline. Education, enlightened self interest, and freedom-of-choice is the answer, not coercion of the state.
