WHO SHOULD PAY FOR URANIUM CLEANUP?

Subject: Response to last week's article, "Navajo reservation in Arizona and Utah was mined for uranium for decades. When the mining stopped, no one cleaned up the toxic remains, resulting in cancer and disease of the Navajo population."

What seems reasonable to me is that the mining company was always responsible for its clean-up, and there should have been fines built up progressively for all the months of delays [before] the US govt. required it to pay the tribe. That the  govt. allows unsafe uranium mining implicates it by policy, so those suffering medically should be put on or receive Medicare/Medicaid benefits – so should ALL of us who are injured by US governmental policies, which these days would include the entire US population, what with GMO seeds, poisonous pesticides, cigarettes, poor air quality due to coal-fired power plants, chem. Trails, BPA, and all of it.

COMMENT BY EDITOR:
When the government pays the bill, where does the money come from? The government is merely a collection agency that takes money from some of its citizens and gives it to other citizens. Is it fair to require taxpayers who had nothing to do with this travesty to pay for the damage? Should the corporation stockholders pay? As an alternative, what about requiring the individuals to pay (corporate managers and political agents) who directed and allowed this to happen? If they had to pay out of their own pockets, how long would these practices continue?

HE WHO PROFITS SHOULD PAY THE CLEANUP

I know when I start a project, I will have to clean up. When corporations make a mess, they need to clean it up. If it bankrupts them, then they proved the cost of the job was greater than the value of doing it.

The "Government" can't be responsible. The Government has no means with which to respond. Only the People have the means to be responsible, The People didn't make the mess, nor did they profit from the mining activities. Asking the government to do it is the same as asking the people to do it,.

The mining companies privatized the profits. The costs to clean up belong solely to the corporations that made the messes. Whatever loss, & death & pain they caused by their irresponsible behavior belongs to them , too. The people who have suffered & the costs they have borne need to be compensated.

CAN NUCLEAR WASTE BE DE-ACTIVATED?

Subject: Radioactive contamination of Navajo land.
The "Price-Anderson" law was passed in 1957. It shifted all responsibility from the nuclear power industry companies committing the crime, over to the US Government/taxpayer. (Reference)

Reports are similar around the world of inhabitants near uranium mines having many, many times the normal cancer rate. Even though Russia Today TV reports on the Navajo problem, they no doubt have similar issues in Russia.

Nuclear power is a monopoly. As such it shows no respect to anyone trying to intervene for any reason, even just to get them to clean up their act, yet stay in business. The monopoly is compounded with them being the only source to sell bomb grade Plutonium to the US Government, as if it needed any more.

Here is the real tragedy though. Plutonium, and any radioactive metal can be neutralized. (Reference) But there is more profit keeping it dangerous and paying exorbitant prices to store the waste. I.E. Yucca Mountain boondoggle. Billions wasted on studies already, but it was never necessary anyway.

I have spoken to the physicist who successfully neutralized the sample of Plutonium 239 described in the above link. He says his equipment is the size of a 2 drawer file cabinet. It can be brought in to any nuclear power plant and begin neutralizing all their stockpiles of nuclear waste on site. No dangerous transportation is necessary.

As to the Navajo reservation. Large areas of land, even as the Fukushima crisis, are a different matter. Talking to a different physicist with a "theory" about a system which could treat large areas would require hundreds of millions of R&D dollars to perfect and implement. Our Dept of Energy has no concern for safety and emergencies, it has to keep all of the politician's pet projects funded.

If anyone of responsibility can be reached at the Navajo reservation, please send them to me. Some aspect of nuclear remediation needs to begin, no matter how small. Perhaps the Navajos need to sue the US Government to fund whatever is necessary.
