I'm sorry I can't attend your course, but I do have a money question that perhaps you can answer in your newsletter... What is the significance of the DJIA:Gold ratio if it gets to 1:1. I'm thinking the two will meet in the middle somewhere, but I don't know what that will mean for the average person or the country as a whole. Can you explain? Thanks.

Hello Dusty. I don’t see any particular significance to that ratio except that, if it happens, it will reflect the fact that the free market is still functioning to some extent. I see no magic-number component in this. It’s just a reaction of the market to supply and demand, with recognition of the fact that the Dollar has become all but worthless as a measure of value in the stock market - or anything else.

I think you will find this interesting. The reports of the Obama Nobel Peace Prize award in the St. Petersburg Times and Bay News 9 have produced hundreds of comments via e-mail from disgruntled and disgusted readers. My own comments re-enforced their views, but I added that Obama & his Socialist "Motley Crew" were not the problem...they are basically 'Puppets' who receive their directives from a higher source from behind the scenes.

I said that the Nobel Prize issue is just one of the many distractions to lead the public away from addressing the real issues that are facing our nation. I suggested that if anyone questions the validity of this fact, then DO THE RESEARCH and discover for themselves WHO the "puppeteers" are, and offered some of the following; Council on Foreign Relations, Trilateral Commission,Bilderburg Group, Federal Reserve ad infinitum. There were comments from others that suggested checking out Bilderburg Group....... They remained posted for a time and then, curiously, they disappeared along with others who had made similar comments! The lists of readers comments was quite extensive with the usual negative & sometimes insulting comments, but they remained posted since they were essentially non threatening. Several readers e-mailed Bay News 9 and St. Petersburg Times asking why our comments had been deleted in our 'freedom of speech' society. Of course, I did not expect any response because I believe that they know why I would not expect a response! If we needed some evidence of internet or Media censorship, then the removal of our comments is an indication that this is indeed a fact. Also, by erasing readers comments it has brought attention to themselves and more questions from readers will follow.....such as "What are they afraid of?" or "Do they have something trying to hide?"

It would be interesting to get some feedback from our subscribers who have had similar experiences?

REPORTS: LARGE NUMBERS FALLING ILL FROM FLU-MIST NASAL SPRAY

I live in Wichita, KS, and my mother-in-law works as a medical transcriptionist from her home. There are several elderly ladies who work for this medical transcription service, which receives recorded audio and written notes from doctors and patients and transcribes them into patient history files.

I was just informed by my mother-in-law that her co-workers at this medical transcription service are greatly alarmed at the number of people who are being admitted into local hospitals in the last few days because they went to get immunized with the nasal form of the flu vaccine, FluMist.

They are coming in greatly ill and in large numbers. This, of course, is receiving zero local news attention. There are news stories that emergency rooms are very busy, but they report that it is because of the flu, not because these people have in common that they received FluMist.

PROBLEMS WITH THE PRESENT HEALTH CARE SYSTEM ABOUND

The recent person who questioned that everyone should have access to reasonably priced health care through the US system must not have been there himself as I have. His belief is somewhat of a Darwinian approach where "entitlement is the REAL culprit", and supposedly your own fault if you become ill. Gee, how humanitarian of him!! And of no concern to the 20,000 or so who died last year, because they could not get access to care. The winners take it all, the losers have to fall or die, whatever!! While they don't turn you away in emergency rooms most cases(there have been some), the charges of $1,000-2,000 + per visit are not unusual, and one overnight stay for routine tests cost me over $10,000 in one hospital. At the time I last visited, I was not covered with major insurance(I can't afford $4-500 a month?), and I was not employed. I recently heard a speech by Rick Santorum, a former senator, who said that several factions had already sold their souls to obtain the money they deemed necessary from the health care system.

The trial lawyers will not be confronted about malpractice suits, because too many in Congress are scared of them it seems. The start of Medicare came about because the market system and charity were not doing the job for our elderly Americans. To their benefit, we do have the best doctors and surgeons anywhere, which is why foreigners come to our medical schools. But if you can't get insurance or have to pay through the nose to get access, what is the alternative to avoid more serious illness or death? In my case, it was a kidney stone which felt like a precursor to it, but the emergency room does stabiIize you. If you need open heart surgery on the spot to save your life, is that going to be rationed to only those that can pay for it?

I'd personally rather see doctors earning a good income than to see insurance executives making multi-million dollar incomes after they've turned down many claimants as the medical gatekeepers. The reform they speak of now is not true reform if the interests for every health care system provider must be protected from compromise.

Countries like Germany have allowed alternative methods of health care for many years , yet we seem to be way behind in that respect also. NO wonder we are ranked so far down the list in terms of the outcome of care for patients. I saw the US ranked 38th somewhere.

READER SAYS ENERGY FROM OIL IS SOON TO PEAK. THEN WHAT?

You invited comment on the many issues in Wendy’s letter (Unfiltered News October 9). I will keep to just one: “the illusion that we are dependent on oil.”

Tens of millions of years worth of sunlight energy was captured in the making of fossil fuels — 300 years ago humans won the energy lottery with it’s discovery. All of our material lifestyle comes from this windfall and our dependence on oil is not an illusion. Rather, the illusion is that this dependency can last forever.

It’s likely that most readers are either a believer in progress and that we’ll techno fix our way through this energy predicament or they believe that without a drastic transition to renewables, the apocalypse is imminent. Both positions are trappings of our cultural myths. Net energy (energy you get out less the energy you put in) various depending upon source. Light sweet crude’s net energy is about 200:1, wind is about 4:1, photovoltaic solar about 1:1 and hydrogen is negative.

The debate on whether peak oil has been crossed is less important than the fact; oil will run out. The same is true of peak natural gas, expected in about 20 years and peak coal, expected sometime before the end of this century. The question that I’ve been asking lately: “What’s it going to be like when the energy lottery winnings are spent?”

Unless humans win the lottery again by discovering another abundant, cheap and safe net energy source, the next 200 years will see our lifestyles slowly go back to being much the same as they were before the discovery of fossil fuels. Being familiar with your excellent research is useful in preparing for this transition. Thank you.

BRITAIN'S HEALTH CARE IS NOT FREE

A friend fwd the UNFILTERED NEWSLETTER to me this morning, and I have now subscribed. I read with interest the comments made regarding the UK NHS system.

In America I find there is misconception that this is a FREE service. I hear that from the writer in this column who is a foreign student in England - and he cites this as a good reason to have the service in the USA. I am living in the USA at the moment (Resident Permit) and I do NOT have medical cover, neither does my husband who is an American citizen.We cannot afford it.

However I need to point out that everyone who pays WORKS in the UK has a proportionately large amount HEALTH INSURANCE money taken from their wages. This is the Premium paid as any other Insurance scheme. Where it differs is that ANYONE can draw from the service. So any foreigners in the country can withdraw without paying a penny into the system. Patients from outside the Commonwealth (get onto the EU in a minute) are (were) meant to be billed for their treatment. Many patients ( notably from the rich ARAB counties) would simply leave without paying and get away with free treatment paid for by the decreasing number of tax payers in the country. Now we have free access to the system from any of the millions of EU citizens who care to cross our borders, the system is obviously struggling to survive. Millions of GBPs have been injected into the NHS budget by the government but it cannot make up for that shortfall. Waiting times get longer and treatments rationed because of this.

The NHS system is a brilliant one when handled well, and managed correctly. For POLITICAL reasons our NHS has been mishandled for decades which adds to the decline in standards.

So please note that a similar system set up in the USA will work BUT IT HAS TO BE MANAGED WELL -and for the people NOT the politicians! And please stop saying it is FREE! ( As a low wage earner in the UK I have to PAY for dental and optical treatment and also for prescriptions - but when I was ill and UNABLE to work , then the treatment WAS there for me and free, when I needed it) It is a case of looking at the 'poor deserving.' as 'there but for the Grace of God go I' )

It is truly amazing as one realizes the blatant idiocy of this nation's “elected” officials. We have lost over 4,000 young men in the name of ‘helping spread democracy’ in the Middle East. This war of insanity runs monthly to the tune of $7B ( billion ) dollars. Don’t let anyone kid you. We are not there to capture Bin Laden or help spread ( alleged ) democracy. No WMD’s either. We are there to keep the oil shipping lanes open. For this purpose, we choose to bankrupt our own nation by using imported oil at exorbitant costs to the American public. Doing this, our elected officials chose to use the blood of our best and brightest young men under the guise of ‘freedom’. If we have the unexplored resources here, wouldn't it make fiscal sense to drill HERE? We save lives and billions of dollars if we get out of the middle east. If we need to use military presence let’s line up those soldiers at the Mexican border and shut down the invasion of illegals and the drug trafficking.

If there is a concern about Muslim extremists entering this country then we need to “close our doors” in the name of national security. As the Romans, the English, and the Soviet Union learned, you cannot be the worlds policeman and keep your country financially fluid at the same time. Those who ignore history end up making the same mistakes. Apparently, our elected officials do not read.

I do not think American leaders are ignorant of history or of the folly of their alleged goals. They are not making mistakes in judgment. They have other agendas relating to personal wealth and global power through The New World Order. Once that is understood, everything thy do is logical.

A thought about Health Care: Our bodies are temples of God. Since we supposedly have separation of Church and State, we need to declare that taking care of our body (health) is a religious belief and the Government must have no control over the private relationship between a Doctor (Minister of Health) and a patient. From reading other's various responses to your criticism of the NHS, and reading the headline over my posted comment, I can only assume that you are of that noble American type - Seldom Right but Never Wrong. At no point in my original letter did I say, or give an inclination that "I like Socialized Medicine because it's free." I like the idea of The Government being involved in medicine, as I pointed out, not because pharmaceutical companies have greater reign to peddle their wares, but because anyone, no matter how poor, destitute or what colour they are will never be left lying on the side of a road if they can't afford medical insurance. Leaving aside the Pharmaceutical companies' inroads into the NHS, anyone who refuses to take
dangerous prescriptions will not be criminalized either. Perhaps your hatred for "Socialized Medicine" means you would like to see a Neo-Liberal Capitalist Medicine system, something similar to what's in the US at the moment. Or maybe you would like to see a free market medical system where only the advantaged can afford it, then those pesky serfs won't be in your way!

Damien, I am a little put off by your personal attack on my character and intelligence. Statements like these tell me you don't really have much to say in the form of rational critique but have fallen to the level of character assault to make your point. My first reaction was to just send your email to the Trash Bin but, on second thought, I have decided to overlook your attitude and just answer your points as best I can. Perhaps others can benefit from the exchange.

The first thing that you need to do is re-read your original email dated September 18. It stated in its entirety: "I really don't see your problem with Socialized medicine, and your rantings against it are starting to turn me off your newsletter. Your trip to England was 40 years ago for God's sake. Just because something has 'socialized' in it doesn't mean its bad. I'm a foreign student living in England and entitled to free GP visits and pretty much free everything. Many other countries say that??"

Now you say: "At no point in my original letter did I say, or give an inclination that "I like Socialized Medicine because it's free." Really! Let's analyze. Your original email conveyed only two thoughts. One was a complaint that I did not like government health care. The second was that government health care is free in the UK. You emphasize that fact with the concluding remark: "Many other countries say that??" If that isn't an inclination that you like socialized medicine because it's free, then it has no meaning at all. Furthermore,
that it is free is the only positive thing you had to say about government health care, so I stand without apology behind
my headline: STUDENT SEES NOTHING WRONG WITH SOCIALIZED MEDICINE. AFTER ALL, IT'S "FREE"

The next curious portion of your statement is: "Perhaps your hatred for "Socialized Medicine" means you would like to see a Neo-Liberal Capitalist Medicine system, something similar to what's in the US at the moment." First off, we learn from this that, although you are a foreign student in the UK benefiting from the tax subsidies of
working-class British citizens, you are not from the United States; but what on Earth is "a Neo-Liberal Capitalist Medicine system?"

This gibberish leads me to suspect that your education has been strongly influenced by fuzzy-minded Marxist ideology. I say fuzzy-minded because these words have absolutely no broadly accepted definition and are typical of Left-Wing propaganda designed to instill hatred against everything that smacks of private ownership and private control. I know it well, because I have read their books. My guess is that you are a passionate advocate of collectivism and, as such, are ready to do battle with anyone who sees individualism as a superior social and economic model. If I am correct in this, there is no single argument I can present here to change your mind, but I urge you (and anyone else grappling with these underlying principles) to allow me to at least present the case for individualism by reading my essay entitled The Chasm, available as a free download here.

Now we come to the crux of your position. You state: "I like the idea of The Government being involved in medicine ... because anyone, no matter how poor, destitute or what colour they are will never be left lying on the side of a road if they can't afford medical insurance." This is the greatest myth of all, and it is based on the assumption that, under private health care, the destitute are left by the side of the road to die. Hogwash!. In truth, it's the other way around. The medical care for the destitute in America has consistently been superior to care for the destitute in any country where health care is provided by the government. True, there are horrific stories of people left to die because they lacked insurance, but each of those can be matched by a hundred horrific stories of people who have been left to die at home or in waiting lines or in unattended hospital beds waiting for their "free" government care.

Prior to the arrival of government intrusion into U.S. medical care several decades ago in the form of Medicare and various similar programs at the state level, it was customary for doctors and hospitals to allocate a significant portion of their services to those who could not pay. Extensive charity was the norm, but was soon replaced by
government funding, rules, regulations, quotas, and guidelines so that medical charity now is all but gone.

By the way, Damien, I hope you realize that the word free is absurd. It merely means free to you at the expense of someone else. Actually, it's not even free to you because, eventually, you are going to pay those costs either by taxation when you join the work force, by inflation even if you never pay taxes, and by loss of personal freedom-of-choice, not only in health care, but in all walks of life - because collectivism knows no boundaries. It does not stay restricted to just health care but seeps into every aspect of human life.

Back to the main point. The destitute will always be better served under individualism via charity and freedom than under collectivism via political expediency and coercion. Therefore, you and your fellow collectivists, although high minded and with the finest humanitarian instincts, have been fooled by Marxist slogans into supporting just the opposite of what you seek.

Finally, you wrote: "Maybe you would like to see a free market medical system where only the advantaged can afford it, then those pesky serfs won't be in your way!" I have already addressed the issue of the advantaged vs. the disadvantaged, but the innuendo that my motive is to not let those pesky serfs get in my way is too insulting to ignore. I will not bore you with the story of my middle-class origin, but I will state as emphatically as I can that the ideology of collectivism, with which you are enamored, is leading inexorably to the greatest serfdom the world has ever seen. If you wish to avoid being a pesky serf forever, I urge you to study further and consider the alternative: individualism. It will set you free.
